Year 5 Year Group Page

🌟 Welcome to Year 5 with Miss Lamaris & Jackie! 🌟

Welcome to Upper Key Stage 2! We have had a wonderful start, so impressed to help your children flourish as they have learned how to tackle their work with increased independence and confidence.

The children have risen to the challenges sent their way, with the tremendous in-class support provided by Jackie Scott.

Year 5 really is a very special year, including some truly fascinating topics, such as using colour to produce seascapes in art and interpreting map symbols in Geography. Another key aspect of Year 5 is preparing your children for the SATs tests, which they take at the end of primary school.

There is, compared to Year 4, an increased focus on grammar and on complex inference skills in reading. In maths, numbers get larger and children learn to break down problems with numbers of up to one million!

Writing requires the pulling-together of all the basic skills acquired in Lower Key Stage 2, so that the children are able to write using different levels of formality and with increased awareness of the reader. We continue to focus on neat handwriting, times tables revision and on spelling more complex (and adventurous words).

Year 5 can certainly be a challenge but learning to overcome these challenges, with a positive growth mindset, is key.

Classroom Life

  • ⭐ The children really enjoy working towards their reward time points on a Friday and taking part in a range of fun activities such as arts and crafts, quiet reading in the library or sports outside.
  • 🥈 We have been working to collect bronze and silver stickers for demonstrating our Christian values such as Perseverance and koinonia including helping others!

  • 📖 We have lots of class initiatives such as special recognition for children who complete their homework well, try their best to learn their spellings and really push themselves with their writing. It is always a pleasure to  stamp work with ‘1 house point’ when children have made an extra special effort!

  • ⚽ We make time for class games on a Friday  and also look forward to visiting the library. Year 5 are just such keen readers and to encourage this, there are also special awards for filling out reading diaries in detail.

  • 💻 It is such an essential life-skill to be able to use a computer with confidence. For that reason, the children have been learning how to publish quizzes using Google forms, collaborate on Google Slide Presentations and confidently create Google Docs, inserting images and typing finished pieces of writing. I think the children will all agree on how much they enjoy computing and how much fun it is to use technology to enhance learning in the classroom.

📚Reading

This is an excellent list of books suitable for Year 5:

If your child is a less confident reader, you can find books for younger readers on the same website.

Below is an example of a poem about the moon and comprehension questions that children might answer after carefully reading the text:

🖋️ Writing

Writing tasks this term include writing narratives based at sea and on an island, informal letters and diary entries from different characters’ points of view. We also compare two ghosts from Dickens’ Christmas Carol later in the Autumn.

Learning Resources

✖️ TTRS is essential to log into to keep practising times tables. If children are fluent in their times tables and corresponding division facts, it means that the spring learning is much easier to access. Without that times tables knowledge, it is difficult to simplify fractions, find common denominators and learn the formal method for long multiplication.

➗ BBC bitesize (Year 5) is so useful for revising different topics in maths:
