Year 2 Year Group Page
Welcome to the Year 2 Team:
Mrs Dias, Miss Huegdon & Karen!
We are all very excited about welcoming you to a year of adventure and discovery with lots of fun and laughter along the way!
Curriculum Overview
English
In English we read more books about explorers - ‘The Boy Who Sailed the World’ and all about Rocket the girl who wants to be an astronaut in the book ‘Look Up.'

We also learn about writing instructions and give some very strange instructions on ‘How to wash a Woolly Mammoth’!
Using all these texts we will be writing short stories trying to perfect our spelling and handwriting and learning how to use adjectives and conjunctions to join our sentences together.
Maths
In Maths we will be counting forwards, backwards, understanding tens and ones as well as adding and subtracting.
Science
In science we look at materials and help Ted choose the right material to keep him dry in the rain. 💦💦
History and Geography
𓊝 In History we are explorers following the voyages of Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong.
🌍 In Geography we learn a very catchy tune to help you remember the Continents and Oceans of the world - it’s a real ear worm!

Classroom Life
We love learning in year 2 and know that it’s ok to make mistakes - that’s how we learn. Even Mrs Dias makes mistakes sometimes!
When we all work hard as a team we can earn Mr Potato Head parts then get a whole class treat!
We can also earn:
- House points
- Dojo points
- Weekly certificates
- Star of the Week - and take Ted home for a visit!
Support for Parents/Carers
Your support makes a huge difference! Here’s how you can help at home:
Reading 📚
Please read with your child 10 minutes every day. This can make all the difference! Children will bring home two phonics books and one library book each week. You can record how they are getting on in their Reading Diary.
Library Day is Friday - bring your book back each Friday to change it.
Homework 🖊️
Homework comes out on a Wednesday and is expected back by the following Tuesday. There are spellings to learn each week along with either a piece of maths or a writing based task. Please support your child to complete their homework each week.
Learning Resources
We recommend your child watch a 10 minute Phonics video as often as possible. These can be found on Read Write Inc.
We use https://www.mymaths.co.uk/ to help us with our maths homework.
